Good Friday Service, Calvary Chapel Cypress Mark 10:32-34 32 Now they were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was going before them; and they were amazed. And as they followed they were afraid. Then He took the twelve aside again and began to tell them the things that would happen to Him: 33 “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and to the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death and deliver Him to the Gentiles; 34 and they will mock Him, and scourge Him, and spit on Him, and kill Him. And the third day He will rise again.” Whether people choose to look at today as a commemoration (Good Friday) or not, the passage above and its implications cannot be overstated. Without getting bogged down in when the actual dates are/were, or when they are observed, this we know. Jesus conquered death, for those who believe. Death was put to death, potentially, for all mankind. God desires that none shall perish, but have eternal life. (2 Peter 3:9) The entire sequence of events are clear from The Word. 1. He came into Jerusalem on the appointed day. (Palm Sunday is it is commonly known) The one day in all of human history, precisely when He was supposed to. He was the spotless Passover Lamb, sent by The Father to be an offering for sin. 2. He was put to death later that week, and so began the 3 day process between death and resurrection. He told His disciples on several occasion this would be the case. As we read through the gospels, it is clear even with all that He taught them, they forgot His words. How often is this repeated by His followers even today and we have hindsight. Wow, that's convicting. 3. Jesus rose from the grave, just as He said He would. So Jesus defeated death, as He had to do, it was His reason for taking on a body of flesh and blood. Innocence in human skin paid for the guilt of sinful man, such is the bottomless depth of God's love for His creation. Nobody deserves to be forgiven, we deserved what He endured. The message of these events is pretty simple to grasp, He endured what He did so that we could be reconciled to The Only True and Living God who reveals all things before they happen. It is great news to know we can be clean and forgiven, (For those who have been Born Again) even though we we often lack the ability to grasp all things. We are not saved because we have it all figured out, we are called to simple faith, because all the details of why God would do all He did is too wondrous for human comprehension. So we believe, so we trust, because He told us to. Most of the world is oblivious to these truths, but to those who do know, they are life! Luke 12:32 Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. |
