Hebrews 5, Jesus and His priestly duty - Pastor Chris Quintana Tonight we are in Hebrews 5 and, as you may expect, it is a continuing thought carried over from chapter 4. The book now turns to a matter of immense importance. The matter of Jesus and His priestly duty. Any person knowing The Law must also know Jesus could not be a priest, He is from Judah and not Levi. This is no small matter, in fact, He cannot function as a priest at all under The Law of Moses. God cannot go against His Word, but Jesus must mediate as priest, so what is to be done about this? Chapter 5 begins the examination and proof from the OT text that Jesus can and does operate under a priesthood, and no One less than God The Father gives us the understanding through David's writings in Psalms. The people to whom the author of Hebrews writes should know this, and yet they seem ill-prepared and have yet to understand this. So, with that, chapter 5 comes to a close. It is a fitting critique of believers who should know better, but because of their self-imposed weakness in hearing and learning God's word, they were still in a place of spiritual infancy. This is the trouble with believers through the ages. God has put marvelous truth and depth of knowledge in His Word, but most professed believers choose to ignore it and live on milk, rather than meat.
